Have you always dreamed of a job as a makeup artist? If you want to be successful in this career, there are a few key traits you need to have. These include:

  • Quick, creative thinking
  • Effective time management
  • The ability to talk to and work with new people
  • Organization and cleanliness
  • A passion for makeup

Quick and Creative Thinking

An interest in makeup artistry means you’re a creative person. Makeup is a great way to play with colors, textures, shading, and other artistic elements. If you’re working with special effects makeup for theater, film, or TV, you can transform people into characters. To be a good makeup artist, you need to be able to use that creativity at the drop of a hat. When you’re working on a photo shoot or behind the scenes of a film, you’ve got a deadline to meet. This is where preparation and research come in handy! Use your curiosity to find out what you’re trying to achieve as a makeup artist. Whether you’re reading a magazine to learn about new trends, or digging into the psyche of the character you’re creating, a little bit of creative prep work goes a long way in this fast-paced industry.

Effective Time Management

Time management is critical in makeup artistry. You may have to do a look on several clients in a short amount of time. When you’re working on set with a photographer or film director, timeliness is even more important. This means you need to be on time and prepared before the clients, whether they’re models, actors, or brides, show up. Getting to work on time, or even early, is crucial as a makeup artist. To be efficient once you get to work, get all your tools and products cleaned, prepped, and ready ahead of time. Working at a runway show? You’re likely going to do makeup for dozens of models in only a few hours time. Have your reference photos ready so you know what you’re doing. Whatever you need to do to manage your time as a makeup artist, do it! Show up on time and work efficiently. It will make clients respect you as a professional and want to hire you again.

The Ability to Talk and Work With New People

Makeup artists don’t usually stay in one place for work. This means you’ll meet a lot of new people. Other beauty professionals, directors, photographers, designers, actors, and models are a few types of people you might work with as a makeup artist. This is a great career if you’re outgoing and like talking to new people. When someone is in your makeup chair, they might be nervous about a film scene or about walking a runway. Chatting with them can put them at ease. Being friendly and warm to your clients and peers is not only professional, but the best way to form good relationships. In the beauty industry success is often about “who you know”. If you’ve got a good rapport with a client or fellow industry professional, it could lead to useful networking opportunities for your future.

Organization and Cleanliness

Keeping your tools clean and organized is an important part of makeup artistry. Makeup artists work with dozens of products every day, ranging from primer, foundation, and powder, to lipstick, mascara, and setting spray. Each of these products will require a different type of brush or sponge for application. When you’re using products and tools on multiple clients, . Forgetting to wash a brush or using the same mascara wand on two different clients can spread bacteria and infection. Keeping disposable applicators, brush shampoos, palettes, and spatulas, and cleaning alcohol on hand at all times is the best way to keep everything squeaky clean. The way you store and organize your tools is also important for hygiene. Dirty and clean brushes should never mix. Make sure you’re prepared with tool pouches or special plastic containers so your workspace will stay clean and bacteria-free at all times.

A Passion for Makeup

To thrive as a makeup artist, you need to have passion. That’s what interested you in the career in the first place, right? Beauty is a creative industry where passionate people thrive. If you love what you do, you’re much more likely to do it with extra love and care. When a client sees how much you love your work, they’ll want to work with you again. They may even share your information with other influential people. The beauty industry is always changing. If you’re passionate about makeup, you probably keep up-to-date on products, trends, and brands. Being well-informed is the best way to stay current. Clients will want you to create modern looks and expect you to know what makeup styles are trending. Use your innate passion and drive to stay ahead of the curve and give clients exactly what they want!

In general the short answer is no, makeup is not bad for your skin! The long answer is that everyone is different, so each person will need to use the makeup that makes up for them. We’ll go over a few pointers to keep your skin clear and healthy, no matter how much you love to use makeup! If you don’t properly wash and maintain your skin, you could run the risk of a breakout. It’s also important to watch out for makeup that could cause allergic reactions!

Use the Right Makeup for You

Not all makeup is made the same and neither are people! This means that you need to experiment with different kinds of makeup to find what is best for you and your skin.
For example, many people love to use waterproof eyeliner or mascara, and for good reason! It’s long-lasting and looks great! However, if improperly removed, it can damage your lashes and the delicate skin around your eyes. Another issue to consider is if your skin has some kind of allergic reaction to the makeup you use. A puffy face won’t be hidden by even the best of concealers!

Tips for Dry Skin

Use liquid of cream makeups to help hydrate dry skin and create a more beautiful look. Using matte or dry makeups don’t work very well for dry skin because it clings to all of the dead skin and can make it look like you rolled your face in corn flakes!

Tips for Oily Skin

Oily skin is dealt with opposite of how dry skin is dealt with. The last thing you need is more moisture! Use dryer makeups with matt finishes to reduce the natural oily shine of your skin. If you use a moisturizing makeup you might end up looking like a porcelain doll!

Tips for Combination Skin

Some people have the challenge of working with combination skin, which is skin that is oily in some parts and dry in others. If this sounds like you then it’s important for you to experiment with the best way to care for and make up your skin. Use makeup for oily and dry skins as needed, and try out different combinations until you find what is healthy and beautiful for your skin.

Pointers to Avoid Makeup Mistakes

While makeup isn’t bad for your skin, there are some things you can do to harm your skin if you’re not careful. Following these tips will make sure that your skin stays healthy and clear!

Always Clean Your Face

The most common negative side effect from wearing makeup is acne, and nobody wants that! Cleaning your face daily can provide a few benefits if you regularly wear makeup. First of all, makeup applies better to clean and moisturized skin, so you will look better right away if you keep your face clean. Second, you should always wash the makeup off your face at the end of the day! If you leave makeup on overnight it can sink into your pores and increases the risk of creating pimples!

Don’t Sweat it!

This tip is a minor one, but make sure you never ever exercise with your full makeup on! A little bit of skin oil is normal for everyday wear and tear, but sweating excessively while wearing makeup can dramatically increase your risk of a breakout. You don’t need to get all of the makeup off of your face, but you can simply use a makeup-removing moist towelette before hitting the treadmill.

Do Some Research!

Just like the ingredients in your food, you should know about the ingredients in your makeup. Most makeup sold in stores in the United States are heavily regulated by the FDA to ensure that there are no dangerous ingredients. Sometimes however, new studies may reveal links between certain ingredients and negative side effects. In cases like that it’s up to you to decide if something might be dangerous to use.

When you think of esthetics, what comes to mind? Skincare, facials, spa treatments, healthy skin? While estheticians are known for their services in skincare, they are also qualified to do makeup. To be a great makeup artist, you have to understand your canvas- skin.

What is Esthetics?

Estheticians are the ones who give facials and skin care treatments, yes, but as part of becoming one you will also learn about how to do makeup on a professional level. If you want to make a career out of your passion for makeup artistry, getting licensed in esthetics is a great avenue for doing this.

What Will I Learn?

If you dream of a career in makeup, and you’re looking to get an education, the esthetics program at Robert Fiance Beauty School covers a variety of topics, including makeup. 150 hours are spent learning about the necessary skills to become a makeup professional, which is more than almost all other topics. This means that makeup is a big part of esthetics.

Another important thing that the esthetics and makeup artistry program covers is the business and professional side of working in the beauty industry. Learning about these topics will play a big role as you try to build a career in the beauty industry as an esthetician and makeup artist. Understanding the importance of networking, resume building, and portfolios all can help you be more successful and find more opportunities for employment.

Where Can You Work?

You may ask, “Once I complete the esthetics and makeup artistry program at Robert Fiance, where can I actually work?

Makeup artists who are licensed in esthetics can hold down a variety of jobs and work in many different places. Some of the places that estheticians and makeup artists are known to work include:

  • Fashion Shows Have you always dreamed of working behind the scenes on the runway? Skilled makeup artists are definitely part of the team that gets the models ready for the catwalk.
  • Movie Sets Actors and backup cast members of movie and theater sets need makeup help. Applying makeup to create characters and help actors prepare takes special knowledge and skills.
  • News Networks Many news networks will have a professional makeup artist on staff to get the anchors ready. The HD cameras that are being used these days require a great makeup artist to help out.
  • Weddings Weddings are a great place to work for makeup artists. Brides-to-be and bridesmaids need a makeup pro on the special day.
  • Photoshoots Anytime there is a photographer, there should be a makeup artist. Doing makeup for a photoshoot can be an exciting job or can be a great side gig.
  • Makeup for the Seasons The holiday season is approaching which can be a busy time for makeup artists. Haunted houses are a good example of a seasonal job for makeup artists.

Where Do I Begin?

Going to school is the first step in getting your esthetics license and learning how to become a professional makeup artist. Contact us and we can answer any questions you may have about enrolling and getting started.
